What should I do when I feel sick?

When you feel sick, it is important for you to:

  • Continue to take your diabetes medicines as usual. Only skip your mealtime insulin if you are not eating meals.

  • Check your blood glucose at least every 3-4 hours. If your blood glucose is below 70 mg/dL or above 180 mg/dL, please use your purple box or the instructions on the Treating Low or High Blood Glucose page to get your blood glucose back in the healthy range.

  • Drink plenty of water if your blood glucose is high or if you are nauseous, vomiting, or having diarrhea.

  • Try to keep eating at least small meals if you can.

Call your healthcare team if you cannot eat or drink or if you continue to have diarrhea or vomiting.
